Learn Tajweed Rules: A Beginner’S Guide To Perfect Quran Recitation

What is Tajweed?

Linguistically, Tajweed means “proficiency” or “doing something well.” Technically, it is the science of giving every letter its right (Haquq)—its permanent qualities—and its due (Mustahaquq)—its occasional qualities, articulation point, and specific rules. The ultimate goal is to preserve the tongue from making mistakes while reciting the Book of Allah.

The Sharia Ruling on Learning Tajweed

The majority of scholars hold that learning the theoretical rules of Tajweed is a communal obligation (Fard Kifayah), while applying them in recitation is an individual obligation (Fard ‘Ayn) for every reader. Imam Ibn al-Jazari stated:
“Applying Tajweed is an absolute necessity; whoever does not recite the Quran with Tajweed is a sinner.”

Rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween

Noon Sakinah (نْ) and Tanween (ــًــٍــٌ) have four main rules when followed by any of the 28 Arabic letters:
RuleLettersCountExample
1. Idh-har (Clarity)ء، هـ، ع، ح، غ، خ6 (Throat letters)مِنْ عِلْمٍ (Min ‘ilmin)
2. Idgham (Merging)ي، و، م، ن، ل، ر6 (Yarmaloon)مَنْ يَعْمَلْ (May-ya‘mal)
3. Iqlab (Conversion)ب1مِنْ بَعْدِ (Mim-ba‘di)
4. Ikhfa (Hiding)Remaining 15 letters15مِنْ تَحْتِهَا (Min-tahtiha)
💡 Memorization Tip: Remember Idgham with the word “Yarmaloon.” Iqlab is only for the letter “Ba.” Idh-har applies to the six throat letters. Everything else is Ikhfa.

Rules of Meem Sakinah

Meem Sakinah (مْ) has three specific rules:
  1. Ikhfa Shafawi (Oral Hiding): Occurs only when followed by the letter Ba (ب). Example: (تَرْمِيهِمْ بِحِجَارَةٍ – Tarmeehim bi-hijarah).
  2. Idgham Shafawi (Oral Merging): Occurs when followed by another Meem. Example: (لَهُم مَّا يَشَاءُونَ – Lahum-ma yasha’oon).
  3. Idh-har Shafawi (Oral Clarity): Occurs with the remaining 26 letters. Example: (وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ – Wa lahum ‘adhabun).

Rules of Madd (Prolongation)

Madd Tabee’i (Natural Madd)

This is a two-beat prolongation that doesn’t require a specific reason. It happens naturally with Alif after a Fatha, Waw Sakinah after a Dammah, or Ya Sakinah after a Kasrah. Examples: (قَالَ Qala, يَقُولُ Yaqulu, قِيلَ Qeela).

Madd Far’i (Derived Madd)

These require a reason, such as a Hamzah (ء) or a Sukoon (ْ):
  • Madd Waajib Muttasil (Mandatory Connected): 4-5 beats—when the Hamzah follows the Madd letter in the same word. Example: (جَاءَ Jaa’a, السَّمَاءِ As-samaa’i).
  • Madd Jaa’iz Munfasil (Permissible Detached): 4-5 beats—when the Hamzah appears at the start of the following word. Example: (يَا أَيُّهَا Ya ayyuha).
  • Madd Lazim (Compulsory): 6 beats—when an original Sukoon follows the Madd letter. Example: (الضَّالِّينَ Ad-dalleen).

Makharij: Points of Articulation

Arabic letters originate from 17 specific points (Makharij) distributed across 5 main areas:
  1. Al-Jawf (Empty space in chest and mouth): For the Madd letters (A, W, Y).
  2. Al-Halq (Throat): 3 points (Deep, Middle, Closest)—includes: ء، هـ، ع، ح، غ، خ.
  3. Al-Lisan (Tongue): 10 points—the majority of letters originate here.
  4. Ash-Shafatan (Lips): ب، م، ف، و.
  5. Al-Khayshum (Nasal passage): The source of Ghunnah (nasalization) in Noon and Meem.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the basic rules of Tajweed?

The most important rules include Noon Sakinah and Tanween, Meem Sakinah, Madd (prolongation), Makharij (articulation points), Sifat (characteristics), Tafkheem and Tarqeeq (heavy/light letters), Qalqalah (echoing sound), and the rules of stopping and starting recitation. All of these are applied practically during Quran reading.

What are the rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween?

There are four rules: Idh-har (at the six throat letters), Idgham (in the letters of “Yarmaloon”), Iqlab (at the letter Ba), and Ikhfa (at the remaining fifteen letters).

Is learning Tajweed mandatory?

Most scholars agree that studying the theoretical rules is a communal obligation, but reciting with Tajweed is mandatory for every reader to the best of their ability. Making a “clear mistake” (Lahn Jali) that changes the meaning or structure is forbidden. “Hidden mistakes” (Lahn Khafi) are viewed by scholars as either forbidden or disliked (Makruh).

How many Makharij (articulation points) are there?

According to the preferred opinion of Imam Ibn al-Jazari, there are seventeen articulation points distributed across five main areas: the chest/mouth cavity, throat, tongue, lips, and nasal passage. Other scholars have counted them as sixteen or fourteen.

What is the duration of Madd in the Hafs ‘an ‘Asim recitation?

In the way of Ash-Shatibiyyah, Madd Tabee’i is held for 2 beats, Madd Muttasil and Munfasil for 4 or 5 beats, and Madd Lazim is strictly held for 6 beats.
