What makes it longerBreaks, weak revision and repeating passages often

One of the most common questions students ask before they start is: how long does an Ijazah take? The honest answer is that there is no single number for everyone. An Ijazah is not a course with fixed hours. It is a complete reading of the Quran to a qualified teacher who holds an Ijazah, from Al-Fatiha to An-Nas, and you only move forward once each passage is recited correctly. In this article we show you how to estimate the time yourself, and what shortens or lengthens it.

What determines how long an Ijazah takes?

Before any calculation, remember that the time has two parts: a preparation stage if you need it, and the complete reading (Khatma) to your teacher. Both depend on these factors:

  • Your Tajweed level: a student who already applies the rules and pronounces the letters from their correct points of articulation (Makharij) can start the full reading straight away. Someone who keeps making mistakes in elongation, nasalisation or letter sounds needs a correction stage first.
  • Type of Ijazah: an Ijazah from memory requires the whole Quran memorised firmly, while an Ijazah by sight is read from the Mushaf. We explain the difference in Ijazah by sight or from memory.
  • Lessons per week: this is the biggest factor. More lessons mean a shorter journey.
  • How much you read per lesson: this varies with your fluency and how often the teacher stops to correct you.
  • Consistency: stopping for weeks and coming back usually means re-reading some passages, because memorisation weakens.

How to estimate your own Ijazah timeline

The standard Mushaf in the Hafs narration has about 604 pages. In a 30-minute lesson, a fluent student usually reads 4 to 8 pages, depending on reading speed and the number of corrections. If we assume an average of 6 pages per lesson, the complete reading takes about 100 lessons. From there you can estimate:

Lessons per weekLessons per month (approx.)Approximate time for the full reading
2 lessons8About 12 to 13 months
3 lessons12About 8 to 9 months
4 lessons16About 6 to 7 months
Daily lesson20 to 30About 4 to 5 months

These are rough figures to illustrate the idea, not a promise. Your teacher does not count pages; they make sure every passage is correct before letting you continue.

The stages of the Ijazah track at Quran Web Academy

In our Ijazah track in Hafs an Asim, a student who has memorised the Quran goes through three stages on the intensive schedule:

  1. A full review with the teacher: about 6 months, reading the whole Quran to the teacher with every mistake corrected.
  2. Checking the Tajweed rules against a classical text: about 3 months, to master the rules in theory and link them to your recitation.
  3. The final Ijazah exam: about one month, after which the Ijazah is written with the connected Sanad.

So the intensive track for a strong Hafiz takes about 10 months. A student on two lessons a week takes longer, but reaches the same result.

How to shorten your Ijazah without rushing

  • Strengthen your memorisation before you start: daily revision before each lesson means fewer stops and repeats in front of your teacher.
  • Correct your recitation first: if you have recurring mistakes, a short correction stage saves you months later. Start by reviewing the core Tajweed rules.
  • Add lessons rather than lengthening them: short, frequent lessons work better than one long lesson where focus fades.
  • Record yourself: listen to your recording before the lesson to catch your own mistakes.
  • Do not stop: two steady lessons a week end up faster than a strong start followed by a long break.

Is a “fast” Ijazah in one or two months valid?

You may see adverts for an Ijazah in a few weeks. A valid Ijazah means the student has read the entire Quran correctly to a teacher who holds an Ijazah. If a student is very advanced and reads for hours every day, the time can genuinely be short. But an Ijazah given without a complete reading, or after reading scattered parts, does not fulfil what an Ijazah means. What matters more than speed is that your recitation is correct and that your teacher holds a connected Sanad.

Frequently asked questions about Ijazah duration

Can I get an Ijazah without memorising the whole Quran?

Yes, through an Ijazah by sight, where you read the full Quran from the Mushaf to your teacher. It is usually shorter than an Ijazah from memory, as no memorisation review is needed.

How long does an Ijazah in the ten Qira’at take?

Much longer than an Ijazah in a single narration, because the student reads the different readings either combined or one by one. Mastering the Hafs narration first is usually required.

Is the duration different online and in person?

Not in content: the complete reading is the same. But studying online makes it easier to add lessons and choose times that suit you, which is what actually shortens the journey for many students.

How can I know the right timeline for me?

In the free trial lesson, the teacher listens to your recitation, tells you whether you can start the full reading straight away or need a correction stage first, and suggests the right number of lessons for your goal.
