6-Month Juz Amma Memorization Plan For Schoolchildren

Juz Amma is the 30th and final part of the Holy Quran, containing 37 Surahs (chapters) ranging from Surah An-Naba to Surah An-Nas, totaling 564 verses. Because most of its chapters are short and rhythmic, it is the standard starting point for children beginning their Hifz (Quran memorization) journey. This guide provides a practical 6-month plan tailored for school-going children attending two one-to-one online lessons per week.

Before You Start: Is Your Child Ready?

If your child can read directly from the Mushaf (the Arabic text of the Quran) with reasonable fluency, they are ready for this plan. If they haven’t mastered reading yet, we recommend starting with the Noorani Qaida (a foundational manual for Arabic reading and pronunciation) first. Alternatively, they can begin memorizing the shortest Surahs by listening while simultaneously learning to read. This plan assumes the child is already a basic reader.

The Monthly Schedule (From An-Nas to An-Naba)

MonthSurahsTotal VersesCumulative Total
1st MonthAn-Nas to Al-Qari’ah (14 Surahs)7979
2nd MonthAl-Adiyat to Ad-Duha (8 Surahs)78157
3rd MonthAl-Layl to Al-Fajr (4 Surahs)86243
4th MonthAl-Ghashiyah to Al-Buruj (4 Surahs)84327
5th MonthAl-Inshiqaq to At-Takwir (4 Surahs)109436
6th MonthAbasa, An-Nazi’at, and An-Naba128564

You will notice the first few months cover more Surahs but fewer verses. This allows the child to build momentum and learn the technique of Hifz. The final months involve longer Surahs, but by then, the child’s memory “muscle” will be stronger and more accustomed to the routine.

What a Typical Week Looks Like

  • Lesson 1 with the Teacher: The child recites what they memorized previously, then reads the new passage with the teacher to correct their Tajweed (rules of pronunciation) and Makharij (the articulation points of letters).
  • Home Practice: Spend 10 to 15 minutes daily. The child repeats the new verses three times while looking at the Mushaf, then once from memory.
  • Lesson 2 with the Teacher: The child recites the new passage from memory and reviews a previously learned Surah.

Revision is More Important Than New Memorization

A child who memorizes quickly without consistent revision will forget just as quickly. Every week must include a review of what was learned in previous weeks, even if it is just one Surah. At the end of every month, dedicate one full lesson entirely to reviewing that month’s progress.

When to Slow Down or Speed Up

  • Slow down if the child begins making frequent mistakes in Surahs they previously mastered, or if they start to show resistance toward the lessons. Six months is a guideline, not a race.
  • Speed up during school holidays. Adding a third weekly lesson during breaks can often shave a full month off the total schedule.

A Weekly Example: Month 1

Let’s say your child is memorizing Surah An-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq (11 verses total) in their first week:

  • Sunday (Teacher Lesson): They read Surah An-Nas with the teacher, focusing on the correct pronunciation of letters like Seen and Sad, then memorize the first three verses.
  • Monday & Tuesday (At Home): They repeat those three verses five times while looking at the book, then recite from memory to a parent, gradually adding the rest of the Surah.
  • Wednesday (Teacher Lesson): They recite the full Surah An-Nas and begin learning Surah Al-Falaq.
  • Thursday & Friday: They complete Surah Al-Falaq at home.
  • Saturday: They review both Surahs together and recite them during their daily prayers.

Tools for Success

  • A Dedicated Mushaf: Use one specific copy of the Quran for memorization. Children often develop a photographic memory of the page layout, and switching books can be confusing.
  • Consistent Audio Recitation: Have them listen to a professional Qari (reciter) before they start memorizing. This helps them internalize the correct rhythm and Tajweed.
  • An Achievement Chart: A wall chart where they can color in the names of the Surahs they have mastered. Seeing visual progress is highly motivating for kids.

Signs the Pace is Right

  • The child can memorize a new passage in 2-3 days without feeling overwhelmed.
  • They can recall last month’s Surahs with very few errors.
  • They don’t associate Quran lessons with stress or fear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why start from Surah An-Nas instead of An-Naba?

Starting from the back (the shortest Surahs) gives the child a quick sense of achievement. Additionally, these shorter Surahs are used most frequently in Salah (daily prayers), making them more practical for a beginner.

What if we fall behind the schedule?

That is perfectly fine. The schedule is a guide, not a rigid rule. It is far better for a child to master Juz Amma in eight months than to rush through it in six only to forget it all later.

Can a child memorize if they can’t read yet?

Yes, they can learn the shorter Surahs through listening (talaqqi). However, we strongly recommend learning to read in parallel, as being able to see the words prevents common phonetic mistakes.

What comes after Juz Amma?

Most students move on to Juz Tabarak (the 29th Juz), following a similar structure of monthly goals and constant revision.

The Role of the Teacher

While parents are great for helping with revision, correcting Makharij (articulation) and Tajweed rules requires a qualified teacher who can provide focused, one-to-one attention. In the Online Quran Memorization for Kids program at Quran Web Academy, our teachers customize this plan for your child after an initial trial session. With 24/7 availability, you can easily schedule lessons around school hours in any time zone.
